The government has decided to allow a yearly "Purge" a 12 hour period once a year where all crime is legal including murder. The idea is to sort of let out your inner demons during this purge and the rest of the year crime will be down. The plan actually works, the only downside is you have to protect yourself and your family during this time. James a well off family made is making tons of money off selling his neighbors state of the art security systems including metal doors, cameras the works. During the purge James' son sees a man walking down the street looking for a safe place to hide. The boy unlocks the system and lets him in. Now the people who were hunting him down are at James' front door looking for the man. James believes in his security system, but the people threaten to get in. And of course they do and wreak havoc.
