Lincoln Rime is a now paralyzed ex forensic expert, who used to work for the NYPD. Lincoln was also the author of several books on forensics including several textbooks which are used in the police academy. Amelia is a patrol cop who was called to check out a tip from a boy who claims to have found something near the railroad track. Amelia with no interest in forensics at all found a murdered man's hand sticking out of the ground and proceeded to walk and photograph the crime scene alone before backup arrived. The photos and story of Amelia made its way to Lincoln and he forcefully suggests the she help with the investigation of the serial murders of a madman who is on the loose.
