A 17 year old girl is found murdered in the rural town of Nightmute, Alaska. Having not dealt with many murders, a friend of the police chief asks his former colleague Will Dormer to fly up from LA to help with the investigation. Dormer gets straight to business and gets close to the murderer right away, but through all the fog Dormer accidentally shoots and kills his partner instead of the killer. Now the killer knows this and uses it to blackmail Dormer, as Dormer is already being investigated by internal affairs back home and doesn't want to his negligence.
